How does it look? I've been trying to improve my coloring.
Also, I have a bit of news for you guys. Side Quests isn't a comic Jeff and I want to do forever, it's more like a prototype of the animated series we dream of it one day becoming. Because of this, Season 2 pages probably won't be finished. They'll just be roughdraft pages like this: http://i.imgur.com/zxl9w8p.jpg
SQ is relatively simple looking, but pages do take me a while to make sometimes. Roughdrafts are fun and quick, and I've been told they still capture the charm of a regular page. If I only did roughdraft pages, I'd be able to update the comic much faster, which would let us see what works and what doesn't, as well as see how our world evolves. I also abhor drawing backgrounds - that's really what takes me a long time. I hate coloring too. And it's mainly just me moping around because I know it's something I have to work through. But with this new found time I can work on promotional art for Side Quests (like my twitter banner https://twitter.com/JeremeyChinshue ), as well as more youtube animations (like.. NoPUNintendo 3?) and our short film ideas.
More promotional and concept art for SQ would be good, it would keep Jeff and I inspired, and it would also look good to the people we will one day pitch to. I was told those business types aren't exactly the most creative people; artwork showcasing important scenes throughout the series would paint a better picture of the cartoon in their minds.
Ideally I want to finish Episode 8 before doing roughdrafts only.. But how would you guys feel if I started doing roughdraft pages with the next update? I'm not saying I'm going to do it, I just want to know what you think.
But the pretty colors! Well, in all honesty, given the infrequency of updates lately, a lack of color would be a fairly acceptable compromise. Won't be very nice to look back on and read, though. Seems like you should at least color in the rest of Episode 8, for consistency's sake.
Also, isn't a penguin in a tuxedo a bit redundant? Oh, and I'd love if that wasn't actually a monocle, just his natural coloration.
I'd be perfectly fine with the rough drafts, especially if they make your life easier and you yourself are fine with it. We get this content for free, so we don't really have any right to complain about any perceived drop in quality like we're entitled to it.
I'd be really psyched to see this series animated. Even with static images you convey a sense of fluid motion which would come out really well in animation. Were you thinking of doing it independently (youtube, etc), or shooting for getting picked up by a network?
Coloring looks awesome dude! Though personally I would of done something a bit different than a simple blue-to-yellow gradient for the setting sun sky, but that's just me. Maybe would of made the outer wall glow a little with a slight blur filter.
Well, I just started reading your comic, and I really enjoyed it, but to be perfectly honest, I really doubt your dreams of animation for Side Quests is going to come to any sort of fruition. I've seen the Side Quests animation and it's not something I'd want to watch on a regular basis.
So what you are essentially doing is retarding one good project to try and work on a failure that won't be seen outside of the internet, if ever.
The excuse that it's already simplistic and that rough drafts would be alright doesn't jive with me. It sounds like you are making excuses.
Maybe you should just finish your current story arc and then kill the whole comic project, because it seems like that's just what you want to do.
There are a lot of artists out there that want to make it in the industry, statistically it's unlikely, but if no one tried no one would do it. Telling someone you doubt they'll make it just because isn't very productive. Plus, I'd want the animated series to look better than one of my first animations, which was the best I could do back then with no real animation skill.
And I'll admit I was making an excuse; after working on this page in my free time after finishing back to back animations, I was frustrated that it took me an entire day to do the first panel, despite how "simple" it may seem, drawing it isn't that simple, especially if I'm a bit burned out. I will finish this season in full detail, but we have a backlog of episodes that I am really proud of, that may never see the light of day here. So I want to get some out in at least a roughdraft. It would be the same as me sketching ideas down in my notebooks, but people still interested in the series could see it, and I would hope that's better than nothing.
I'm sorry I whined about it. I have a lot of SQ and other original ideas that I want to let out into the world, but I can only work so fast. I also know how it seems when people talk about achieving great things, before they've done it. I'll keep the dream of SQ becoming an animated series to myself and to my Patrons until actual progress is made.
Just a little quick suggestion, if you did something like make the balloon string more noticeable and remove the lines from Jeff's fingers ( http://prntscr.com/7iok5w ), then your rough drafts could easily pass off as a gray scale comic
Thank you @Sike! Yeah, if/when I do roughdraft pages, I won't use red speech bubbles and I'll color characters in white so you don't see the background through them. It'll be spruced up a smidgin, but these roughdrafts I do right now are just quick roughs mainly for me.
@Geniusguy445 Coloring only characters might be weird, I've also noticed how some mangas and webcomics have important pages colored and others in grayscale, I also think that's weird. I think it should be consistently one or the other.
But thank you all for your input! We'll see how things are going by the time this episode/season is finished. That'll determine if the comic will lose color or not!
Also, I wanted to get a page up this coming Wednesday, but it won't be happening. I need to finish a Lore before the weekend and the past few days I had a bunch of friends come into town for another friend's wedding. It's been chaos!
I'd rather see them in colour but I'm sure that eats up a lot of your time, so going grey or mostly grey is defiantly a good idea, but at least finish up this season/episode/watchyoumacallit in colour
If you do go grey then I demand you do a 1940-50's dectevive episode, with private eye Jeff and his bumbling assistant jeromey =)
